これは、壺田亜矢さんのコンポート。コンポートってかわいい、ほんとにフォトジェニック。だから部屋のどこかにいつも出しておきたいアイテムなのはあたりまえだけど、これはとくにそうで。コロンとやわらかいフォルムといい、直径13センチという大きくも小さくもない絶妙なサイズ感といい、その軽やかさに反して重心がしっかりしていてちょっとやそっとじゃ倒れそうもないところといい、生活の中で私の目を癒してくれるところといい、いろんな意味でちょうどいい。いまやテーブルの上の常連です。一番の出番はフルーツだけど、すこし残った煮物を遅く帰った家人のために取っておくときには、なんだか特別なおかずに見えたりして、とても助かったり。昼間は鍵やリップもついつい放り込んでしまったりとうちに溶け込んでいる。購入したのは軽井沢の「うつわ手仕事 芽吹き」さん。お料理好きの店主が日々のおかずが映える愛用のうつわや道具の数々を紹介している。壺田亜矢さんは、夫の和宏さんとともに宮崎で作陶していて「大抵のものは自分でつくれるし、その時間がたのしい」とおっしゃっていて、茶漉しとかお玉みたいな道具も陶器でつくってしまう。そういうTRIBEみたいな作家のあり方に、私は使う楽しみをもらい、同時に助けられているのだな。

This is Aya Tsubota’s compote dish. Compote dishes are so charming—truly photogenic. This compote is particularly special that I want to keep on display somewhere in the room. From its plump, soft shape to its exquisite size—13 centimeters in diameter, neither too large nor too small—and the fact that, despite its light appearance, it has a solid centre of gravity that makes it seem unlikely to tip over at the slightest touch, right down to the way it entertain my eyes everyday, it’s just right in every sense. Its main role is for fruit, but when I save a little leftover for a family member coming home late, it somehow makes the dish look special, which is a great help. During the day, I find myself tossing my keys and lips into it. I bought it from ‘Utsuwa Teshigoto Mebuki’ in Karuizawa. The owner, who loves cooking, showcases a range of her favourite tableware and utensils that make everyday dishes look their best. Aya Tsubota creates pottery in Miyazaki alongside her husband, Kazuhiro, and says, ‘I can make most things myself, and I enjoy the process.’ She even crafts utensils like tea strainers and ladles from clay. It is this ‘TRIBE’-like approach to craftsmanship that gives me the joy of using these pieces, whilst also providing me with practical help.
