Glassware by Hiroi Hanaoka

これは、花岡央さんのガラス器。夏になるとグリーンのボウルの使用頻度が高くなる。色ガラスにスリットが入った作品は、花岡さんによる発明品と言っても過言ではないデザインだ。ガラス器は、熱したガラスを吹く工程によりふんわりと丸みを帯びるのだけれど、その過程でスリットがびよ〜んと伸びで、均一すぎないやわらかなストライプを描く。以前、食事会をした時には、私の好みでタンブラーをお願いしたのだけれど、そちらには丸く吹くことで生まれる線の柔らかさはなく、そのかわり、すっきりモダンな縞を見ることができた。それもまたよかった。食卓で毎日使う水指しは、我が家の必需品だ。花岡さんは、岡山県に「HIROY　GLASS　STUDIO」という名のガラス工房を構えながら、ご実家のお米づくりも手伝っていて、RICEというクリアブルーの無地のシリーズは、お米の粉を材料に調合して色をだしている。以前うかがったときには、工房の窓から見える田んぼが綺麗でクリーンで、水と稲の恵みをたっぷりと感じながら、水をうけるうつわづくりをするという一連の制作環境が、色にあふれた作品づくりの健やかさを支えているように見えた（詳しくはこの記事に書いてある）。うつわを使うたびに、大袈裟ではなく、あととき体感した清々しさを思い出していて、盛り付けるものはどうしても、ぷるんとみずみずしいものになる。夏野菜のマリネとかおひたしとか、そういうもの。

This is a glass bowl by Hiroi Hanaoka. It would be no exaggeration to call this piece—featuring slits in colored glass—an invention. Glassware typically takes on a soft, rounded shape through the process of blowing heated glass, and during that process, the slits stretch out, creating soft, uneven stripes. I have asked him to make a straight tumbler which actually lacked the softness of the lines created by the rounded blowing technique, but instead, it featured clean, modern stripes. That became also a lovely piece. The water pitcher we use daily is an essential item in our home. He runs “HIROY GLASS STUDIO” in Okayama while helping with rice farming of his family. The “RICE” series—a collection of clear blue, plain-colored pieces—uses rice powder into the material to create its color. When I visited him, the rice field through the window were beautiful and pristine. It seemed that the creative environment—where he crafts vessels for holding water while deeply feeling the bounty of water and rice—supports the vitality of his colorful creations (more details are in this article). Every time I use these bowl, I’m not exaggerating when I say I recall the refreshing sensation I felt back then, and the food I serve in this bowk inevitably ends up being plump and juicy—things like marinated summer vegetables or blanched greens.
