Glass plate by Hinako Kumita

This is a glass square plate by Hinako Kumita. It’s so cute and it fits my current mood perfectly. She uses two techniques to create her works: “pate de verre,” a technique in which glass powder is filled into a mold and fired in a kiln (i.e., glass is melted and formed according to the shape of the mold), and “blown glass,” a technique in which heated glass is shaped by blowing air into it. This is pate de verre. Many artists say that the advantage of this technique is that it allows them to take their time in the mold-making process and pay close attention to the details of the design, as well as to the combination of colors and shades. After firing in the kiln, she carefully breaks the plaster mold to remove the glass inside. It should be an intense working process. However, her work is filled with happy atomosphere that I do not feel the slightest bit of such hardship.The vague border between the two colors, blue and pink, reflects my personal feeling of wanting to say goodbye to the current difficult situation of myself and also of the world, fly into the future, hand in hand with close friends and colleagues, with flexible ideas. It is a vessel that cheers me up. Bye-Good-Bye.

これは汲田日向子さんのガラスのスクエアプレート。かわいい。かわいすぎる。そしていまの私の気分にぴったり合う。汲田さんはパート・ド・ヴェールという「ガラスの粉を型に詰めて窯で焼く（＝型の形状に沿ってガラスが溶けて成形される）技法」と、吹きガラスという「熱したガラスに空気を吹き込んでかたちづくる技法」で作品を作る。こちらはパート・ド・ヴェール。この技法は、型をつくる工程にじっくり時間をかけて細部のデザインまでこだわり抜いたり、色の組み合わせや濃淡の出し方に時間を注げるのが利点と言う作家が多い。窯で焼いた後は、石膏型を砕いて中にあるガラスを慎重に取り出すのだけれど、それで完成ではなく、バリと称する余分な部分を丁寧に取り除いたり、表面をひたすら磨いたり、とにかく時間がかかる根気のいるお仕事だ。しかしながら、汲田さんの作品はそんな苦労を微塵も感じさせない、澄みわたった明るさにあふれている。ブルーとピンク、二色のあいまいな境界線に、不安の絶えない世の中に寂しさを覚えつつも、できれば柔軟な発想で周囲の人と手を取り合って現状にさよならして、未来に飛びたちたいという個人的な感情を投影した。見るたびに背中を押されるうつわになるはず。そういうのって、いい。Bye-Good-Bye。
