Rim plate by Yuichi Nakata

This is Yuichi Nakata’s rim plate. The white color is so thick as if some sweet cream instead of glaze. The soft surface, as if filled with air, is so smooth. When I lift it up, it is lighter than I expected. The glaze is covered all the way up to the base, but the edges are still there to keep it cool looking. So when placed alongside old tableware, it gently connects that era with the present, reminding us of the path that Western tableware has taken. How can something made by Japanese man with Japanese clay give off such an exotic atomosphere. I intend to find out the secret as I continue to use it, but for now, the slightly shiny white color enhances the freshness of the fruit, and I have confirmed that the French fries I took out look like “frites” served with steak at a bistro, making me want to make a Nice-style salad. Oh, I want to go to France. This is a kind of utsuwa(vessel) that led me to travel.

これは中田雄一さんのリムプレート。釉薬代わりにあま〜いクリームをのせているのなのではないかと妄想するほど、とろりとした白。空気をふくんでいるかのように柔らかな表面は、手を触れると思ったとおりなめらかで（やっぱり！）、持ち上げると予想より軽い。高台まで釉薬で包まれているのにエッジはきちんとあって、ほっこりとせず、古い食器と並べると、その時代といまをなだらかに繋いで、洋食器が歩んできた道を連想させる。日本の土で日本人が作って、どうして異国の匂いを醸すのか。その秘密は、これからも使いながら探っていくつもりだけれど、いまのところ、ほんのり艶のある白がフルーツのみずみずしさを引き立て、テイクアウトしたフライドポテトをビストロでステーキに添えられた「フリット」のごとく見せることを確認し、ニース風サラダを作りたくなったりもして……。あーフランスに行きたい。これは旅したくなるうつわでもあるのだった。

White plate of 24 cm. String is threaded through a hole in the base so it can be hung on the wall. A white simple plate for the wall decoration? Just as I was thinking that, Nakata-san said, “When the kitchen is small, it is convenient to use the wall as well. Oh, yes, that’s the way of life, isn’t it? Well, it is useful, as well as it can be appreciated like a painting on the wall.
直径24センチの白プレート。高台の穴にひもを通してあるので壁掛けできる。白いのに飾り皿？と思った矢先、中田さんは「キッチンが狭いとき、壁も使えると便利ですから」と言った。あ、そうね、暮らしってそういうものよね。やってみるとなるほど便利だし、柔らかな質感を絵画のように”鑑賞”もできます。
