Square plate by Kan Ito

This is a square plate by Tamaki Ito. Whenever I see the flow of ash glaze painted on the surface, I somehow feel sentimental, imagining the time this piece spent in the kiln and the various chemical changes that must have occurred in the clay during that time. The faded color of the vase, like an old sepia-toned photograph, also helps me to feel the preciousness of the passage of time every time I use it. The years that have passed since I bought it, the trivial events of my life since the last time I used it, and the time it took to take it out of the cupboard, serve the food, and move it to the dining table. I know that one of the pleasures of vessels is that memories accumulate as you use them.

これは伊藤環さんのスクエアプレート。表面に描かれた灰釉の流れを見るたびに、このうつわが窯の中で過ごした時間と、そのあいだに土に起きたであろうさまざまな化学変化を想像して私はなぜかセンチメンタルな気持ちになる。セピア色の古い写真のように郷愁をそそるあせた色味も手伝って、使うたびに時の流れの尊さを感じさせるうつわなのだ。購入してからいままでの年月、前回使ってから今日までの生活の些細な出来事、食器棚から出して料理を盛りつけ、食卓に移動するまでの調理の時間。使うことでそこに記憶が積み重なっていくことも、うつわの愉しみのひとつだと知る。

The colors of beans and green vegertables look great on the faded canvas-like color.
あせたカンバスのような色に豆や菜の花の色がとても映えるので、春先に特に頻繁に使う気がする。

It is very helpful that too simple cooking like shabu-shabu look gougeous.
お湯にくぐらせるだけの簡単すぎる冷しゃぶが、ちょっと気取って見えるのはとても助かるわけで……。
