Gustavusberg vintage cup and saucer

These are cup & saucer from Swedish ceramic brand Gustavsberg, designed in 1954 and produced until 1974 (a reissue is now available). I got them from vintage market. It is the tableware that first awakened my interest in vessels with a background. Yes, it started not with Japanese tableware but with Scandinavian vintage. During the period when I was not able to go out much after the birth of my first son, I started researching Arabia (Finland) platters given by my Mom on the Internet, I had information about other potters and designers. In the 1950s, Scandinavian craftsmanship took off, with highly skilled workshops employing designers and created their own unique styles. Behind this was the increase in the number of small houses due to housing difficulties caused by urbanization due to rapid postwar growth, and the fact that traditional heavy, ornate furniture and tableware no longer suited people’s lifestyles. Stig Lindberg (Sweden) and Kai Frank (Finland) designed simple tableware for a new life. This coffee cup from Stig Lindberg’s “adam” series is quite compact, with a diameter of 7 cm. Even a small table can easily accommodate four cups and four plates. I have many Japanese tableware, but I feel like using Western tableware for birthday cakes probably because that’s what my mother used to do. Somewhere in my memory, I have my mother’s behavior of “Let’s use Western tableware for a special occasion,” and I love that I can recall it through her tableware when I need it. It is wonderful to see the Scandinavian makers of the 1950s and the Japanese maker of today chat at the table today.

これはスウェーデンの陶磁器メーカー・グスタフスベリのカップ＆ソーサー。1954年にデザインされ74年まで製造されていた（現在は復刻版が販売されている）ものを、ヴィンテージマーケットで見つけた。私が、作られた背景を知ってうつわを使うことの面白さに目覚めたきっかけの食器だ。そう、はじまりは、和食器ではなく北欧ヴィンテージだったのだ。長男が生まれた直後のあまり外出できない期間に、実家から譲り受けたアラビア（フィンランド）の大皿についてネットで調べるうちに、いつの間にか、それ以外の窯元やデザイナーの情報も入ってきて詳しくなった。で、ポチる回数も増えた、はは……。50年代の北欧の工芸は、高度な職人技術を持つ工房がデザイナーを採用し、独自の作風を切り開いて飛躍。その背景には、戦後の高度成長による急速な都市化が起こした住宅難により、狭小の住まいが増え、従来の重厚で装飾性のある家具や食器が生活に合わなくなったことがある。スティグ・リンドベリ（スウェーデン）やカイ・フランク（フィンランド）というデザイナーの名を知る人は多いはず。彼らは、新しい日常のための、シンプルかつ、ひとつでいく通りも楽しめる食器をデザインしたのだった。スティグ・リンドベリの「adam」シリーズのこのコーヒーカップも、直径7センチとなかなかにコンパクト。狭いテーブルでも４客＋４枚のケーキ皿＋大皿などゆうに置けると思う。機械と手作業が混じり合う中量生産が多かった時代で、均一であるべき絵付けの丸と丸の間に隙間があったりする。その完璧でない感じと、リンドベリのポートレートの気の抜けたカーリーヘアがリンクして、手にしたとき、ちょっと笑ってしまったことを思い出す。日本のうつわが多い我が家だけれど、お誕生日ケーキにはつい洋食器を使いたくなるのは、母がそうしていたからだと思う。「ちょっとスペシャルな日は洋食器にしましょう♪」っていう世代の母の行動が私の記憶のどこかにあって、必要なタイミングにうつわを通して呼び覚まされるのが愛おしい。ポットは日本のものしか持っていないから、ブルーに合わせて染付のポットを使うけれど、いい感じ。50年代の北欧と現代の日本の作り手が今日も食卓でおしゃべりをしている。

グスタフスベリの「adam」のセット。ちなみに同柄の赤色のシリーズは「eva」という。アダムとイヴのリンゴがモチーフなのかもしれない。

When you purchase vintage sets of cups and saucers, you should buy cake plates as well. The hole series of tableware can completely change the atmosphere of the table at dessert time after a meal.
