Vase by Adam Silverman

This is a vase by Adam Silverman. Adam is an American ceramic artist and a founding member of the LA-based fashion brand X-Large. He has been active in ceramics since 2002, when he was the director of LA-based ceramics maker HEATH CERAMICS while in Japan, he exhibited his work at stores such as Playmountain (Tokyo) and Starnet (Mashiko) and other places in Japan. Adam was famous for blue or pink ceramics with rugged textures of lava glaze, but my husband, who hardly go to ceramic exhibition accompanied me chose this crusty, white glazed jar and said, “This is beautiful, I want it.” I thought “Why?” because it was not his typical work. However, after living with this vase for almost 20 years, I think the casual texture suits our walls and furniture well. It is just right for welcoming an ordinary flower, like the one I pick in the park. Good job, husband!

これはアダム・シルヴァーマンの花器。アメリカの陶芸家でLA発のファッション・ブランド「X-LARGE」の創設メンバーでもあるアダム・シルヴァーマンは、2002年より陶芸活動を開始したそうだが、LAの陶器メーカー「HEATH CERAMICS」のディレクターをしている頃に、日本では、プレイマウンテンやスターネット（益子）などで作家としての仕事を発表していた。すごく素敵な人だ。この壺は、その頃もとめたもの。作品展ではなく、ふらり立ち寄ったプレイマウンテンの店頭だったと思う。アダムといえば、溶岩釉のゴツゴツしたテクスチャーのブルーやピンクの焼物が目を引き人気だったのだけれど、一緒に行った夫が「これ、綺麗、欲しい」といったのは、白い釉薬のカサカサとした手触りの壺だった。「アダムなのになんでそれ？」って思ったけれど、20年近くこの花器と生活を共にしていて思うのは、ともするとカジュアルすぎるこの質感が、うちの壁や家具によく合っていたのだなということ。壺なんだからもっと厳かな雰囲気を出してもいいのに、公園で摘んだようななんでもない一輪を部屋に迎え入れる時になんともちょうどいいのだ。これほど気に入る壺形の花器にはその後出会っていない。夫よ、グッジョブ。
