Yakimono-no-mikata(How to look at pottery)written by Masaaki Arakawa

This is a view of ceramics by Professor Masaaki Arakawa at Gakushuin University, specializing in the history of Japanese ceramics, former curator at the Idemitsu Museum of Arts, who has extensive experience in research and exhibition viewing.

“In the Momoyama period, Japanese ceramics underwent a major transformation from “utilitarian vessels” to “vessels to look at” that could be enjoyed by admiring them. It was reborn as a medium for fashion, just like a costume, and as a material for vividly expressing the new urban mode.”
