Vase by Kansai Noguchi

This is a flower vase of JOMON series created by Kansai Noguchi. The base is not particularly large, but the stem is sturdy and stable. The shape, which widens slightly halfway up and tapers slightly towards the mouth, is very functional when flowers are inserted. Due to the slanted inner walls, the stems rest comfortably, allowing even flowers with large petals, such as hydrangeas, to be positioned exactly as desired. This would only be possible when structured in perfect balance between the diameter and the curvature of the sides. It is truly remarkable. Noguchi’s JOMON series has recently gained recognition in art field, such as large vases and boldly curved flower vases. Even in this compact piece, his incredible craftsmanship that combines a sacred presence connected to the Earth’s axis with the functionality of a vessel that beautifully displays its contents is evident, and I love how that essence seeps into the larger works as well.

これは野口寛斉さんのJOMONシリーズの花器。墨で描いたような情緒的な線とシリンダー型のクールなデザインのコントラストをいたく気に入ってしまった。底面は決して大きくないが、軸がしっかりしていて安定感がある。高さの半分くらいで少し外に広がり、口に向かってややすぼまっていくこの形は、花を挿すととても機能的なことに気づく。内側の壁が斜めだからだろう。茎の先端がほどよく止まり、例えば花弁の大きな紫陽花であっても、思い描く理想の位置に茎をステイさせることができるのだ。だから一輪でもちょっと主張のある生け方ができる。口径と側面のカーブの関係性がうまくいっていないと、こうはならない。さすがである。野口さんのJOMONシリーズは、大壺や大胆なくびれのある花器などアート性の高い作品が近年評価を得ている。この花器はずいぶん前に購入したものだけれど、家庭で使いやすいコンパクトなピースにさえ、地球の軸と繋がるような神聖な佇まいと、入れるものを美しく見せるうつわとしての機能性を共存させたものづくりをされてきた凄みが、大きな作品にも、たふたふと漏れ出ていて好きだ。
