
Favorite earthenware pots
This is my three earthenware-pot-brothers. I take them off the shelf and stack them in the kitchen in winter, ready to use at any time. The top one is Asuka Tokuba’s pot. Its bowl-shaped body and handle are integrated into one piece, and the handle is flat, making it very easy to hold. I was surprised at the high functionality of the pot when I brought hot, sizzling nabeyaki udon noodles to the table. The delicious egg color, like an ice cream is also irresistible. Melty egg gruel, green onion and tofu soup, all the gentle colors of the menu floated in my mind, and that alone was enough to make me feel warm. In the center is a one-handed pot from the Dorakugama, a kiln in Iga, which I brought out from my parents’ house. I like the painting. I sometimes put mandarin oranges or rice crackers in it on the table. The bottom one is a handled pot also from Dorakugama. The same one used at my parents’ house was given to me as a wedding present. In other words, the scene of “pot day” as I know it has not changed since I can remember. This pot stands stoutly in the middle of the table, with vegetables and pork as the main ingredients, and various condiments. Since the pot is large, I looked into it and used a ladle to scoop up ingredients. Yose-nabe, chige-nabe, kiritanpo-nabe, shabu-shabu, takikomi-gohan, etc. Memory of the house where I grew up and the house here preciously mixed together.

これは我が家の土鍋三兄弟。冬になると棚から出してキッチンに重ねておく、いつでも使えるように。一番上は、十場あすかさんの耐熱一人鍋。どんぶり型の本体と取っ手が一体になっている上に、その取っ手が平らなのでとても持ちやすい。アツアツ、グツグツかつ、汁たっぷりの鍋焼きうどんをテーブルに運んだ時、その機能性の高さに驚いた。「アイスクリン」みたいに美味しそうなたまご色もたまらない。とろとろの卵がゆ、ネギたっぷりのお出汁にお豆腐と油揚げなど、やさしい色味の献立ばかりが頭に浮んで、それだけでもぬくぬく。真ん中は素朴な鉄絵が好きで実家から連れ出した伊賀の土楽窯の片手鍋。貫入(ひび割れ)に色がついていい感じに育っているので、みかんやお煎餅を入れて置いておくことも。一番下は土楽窯のハンドル鍋9寸。実家で使っているのと同じものを、嫁入り道具として持たされた。つまり私の知る「お鍋の日」の光景は、物心ついた時から変わっていないのだ。テーブルの真ん中でずんぐりと存在感を放つこのお鍋の傍らに、白菜と豚バラがメインの具材、薬味いろいろ。鍋が大きいのでちょっと覗き込みつつ、お玉でたくさんすくってよそう所作。寄せ鍋、チゲ鍋、きりたんぽ鍋、しゃぶしゃぶ、炊き込みご飯などなど……。育った家とこの家の記憶が混じり合ってあったかい。
