Mug by Akari Furutani

これは古谷朱里さんのマグカップ。千駄木の「箒星」のグループ展のDMで見ていい濃度の赤色が気になって仕方がなく、急いで観にうかがったことをいまも鮮明に覚えている。ひとつひとつ手にとって、つかみ心地を確かめた。朱里さんのマグやピッチャーは、取っ手のつかみ心地がすこぶるいい。薄く平らでなめらかな取っ手の輪は、指先に吸い付くような感覚でマッサージを受けているような気持ちよさ。あたたかいものを飲むうつわに、このホッとする感覚が宿っているのだから、食器棚から出してお湯を沸かすあいだの時間から楽しみに満ちていく。このタイプのしなやかな取っ手は、プーリングハンドルという「粘土をひっぱりながら丸みを作っていくようなイメージの」技法で、朱里さんがアメリカなど海外で作陶した時に学び身につけたものだと聞いた。私にとっては、高校時代に住んでいたアメリカ北東部で身近だったネイティブアメリカンのラグや小物を思わせるプリミティブな赤なので、そのお話を聞いて親近感を覚えた。深夜のお茶にこんな柄のコースターを合わせて飲むことが多い。口作りは薄く軽やかだ。かたわらにあるのは、長男が小学校の図工の時間に削ったウッドスプーン。この口当たりもなめらかで、やさしい。心なごむ気に入りの組み合わせ。

This is a mug made by Akari Furutani. I vividly remember seeing it in the brochure for the group exhibition at “Hōkiboshi” in Sendagi, Tokyo, being utterly captivated by its rich, perfect shade of red, and rushing over to see it. I picked several mugs up, testing how it felt in my hand. Akari’s mugs and pitchers have handles that feel exceptionally good to hold. The thin, flat, smooth ring of the handle feels like it’s sucking onto your fingertips, offering a massage-like comfort. This soothing sensation resides in the vessel meant for warm drinks, filling the time from taking it out of the cupboard to boiling the water with anticipation. I heard that this type of supple handle is made using a technique called pulling handles, which involves “pulling the clay while shaping it into a curve.” She learned and mastered this technique while making pottery overseas, including in America. For me, the primitive red color reminds me of Native American rugs and small items that were familiar to me during my high school years living in the northeastern United States, so hearing that story made me feel a sense of kinship. I often drink late-night tea with a coaster featuring this pattern. The rim is thin and light. Beside it lies a wooden spoon my eldest son carved during elementary school art class. Its mouthfeel is also smooth and gentle. A comforting, favorite combination.
