Oval plate by Takuji Hayashi

This is an oval plate by Takuji Hayashi. The lines extending toward the edges of the oval are so graceful that to me, they resemble a grass boat made of bamboo leaves. The thinness looks as if it could float on water. Thanks to the wide rim, it looks very spacious when you place it in the center of the table with steak, fried chicken, or stewed dishes. When my children were in kindergarten, I often used it when hosting lunch for my mum friends at home while waiting to pick the kids up. It was usually penne with tomato sauce, time-saving menu for toddlers, but simply transferring the freshly cooked pasta from the pot made it look luxurious, lifting everyone’s spirits and sparking lively conversation. Although oval plates are often associated with western cuisine, the depth that this plate has makes it suitable for Japanese style fish dishes soaked in dashi-broth. You can even serve a whole fish in it. It’s a versatile piece that meets all your needs.
