Shallow Bowl by Ryuichi Haga

This is a shallow bowl by Ryuichi Haga. Haga works in Mashiko, a pottery-producing area in Tochigi Prefecture, and mainly uses clay that he has dug up himself (raw clay), deciding what to make based on the characteristics of each clay. Raw clay can be refined according to the user’s preferences, allowing the natural, rustic texture and roughness of the clay to remain intact. This is my imagination and interpretation, because he loved the clay so much, he gave it a simple, rough shape (though the actual process was likely more intricate) and fired it in a wood-fired kiln, resulting in some cracks along the rim of the bowl. He enjoys this kind reaction of clay. The contrast between the destructive strength and the cool ice-blue colour is simply irresistible. The black dots visible on the surface are iron particles from the clay that have risen to the surface, but to me, they resemble chocolate mint ice cream or Dalmatian spots—they look fashionable to me. The wild, undulating form, the wildness of the cracks along the rim—all of it captivated me at first sight, and the exhilaration of that moment returns every time I use it. The vessels, which exist as a process of moving back and forth between experimentation and practice, are full of fascinating details and never grow old. Haga creates both works that are the ‘ultimate unfinished pieces,’ as if to say, ‘This was created during an experiment pushing the limits of clay and glaze,’ and that are decent works of tea bowls or sake cups.

これは芳賀龍一さんの浅鉢。芳賀さんは、栃木県の焼物産地・益子で活動、おもに自分で掘ってきた土(原土)を使い、土の特徴にあわせて作るものを決めていく。原土は、使う人が好みに応じて精製できるため、土本来の素朴な手触りや荒々しさを残しやすい。ここからは私の想像&イメージだけれど、この土が愛おしすぎたがゆえに、ざっくりかたちを与えたくらいのシンプルな状態で(実際の行程はもっと緻密なはず)薪窯に入れたからだろうか、うつわのふちが一部裂けている。その破壊的な力強さとクールなアイスブルーのコントラストがたまらない。表面にポツポツと見える黒いドットは、土の中の鉄分が表面に現れたものだけれど、私には、チョコミントアイスか、はたまたダルメシアン柄か、最高にモードに見える。ワイルドに波打つ全体のフォルム、「ふちに亀裂入ってるやん!」というワイルドさ、すべてに一目惚れして即決したときの高揚感が、使うたびによみがえるうつわだ。芳賀さんは「土と釉薬について極限を追究した実験の途中にできたものです〜」とでもいうような「最高の未完成」の作品と、茶碗やぐい呑みのようなうつわ然としたもののどちらも手がける。実験と実践をいったりきたりする過程としてのうつわは、見どころが多く飽きることがありません。
