Wine glass by Taku Eiki & Holmegaard

These are wine glasses by Taku Eiki (right) and Holmegaard of Denmark (left). Cylindrical wine glasses are casual in both design and price, so I don’t buy many at once, I enjoy adding different cylindrical glasses to my collection. These glasses are a staple for balcony drinking. When I thought about why they are suitable for outdoor use, I came up with four reasons. 

1. They are only about 10 cm tall, so even if you accidentally knock them over while drunk, they are unlikely to fall over. 
2. They fit comfortably in your hand like a cup, so you can lift them easily without holding the stem. 
3. The wide mouth makes them easy to pour.
4. If you prefer thin glass, choose Eiki; if you prefer sturdy glass, choose Holmegaard—you can choose based on your preference. 

Both are stackable, saving storage space. My son often choose one of them when making smoothies in the morning. The shape may inspire him of non-alcoholic casual drinks. They are the vessels to bring to mind various occasions, and its uses naturally expand on their own.

これは永木卓さん（右）＆デンマークのホルムガード（左）のワイングラス。永木さんのものは個展でいただき、ホルムガードは夫がヴィンテージ品に出会い持ち帰ったと記憶する。円筒形のワイングラスはデザインも値段もカジュアルだから、買う時にはたくさんにせず、あえて２個ずつ。雰囲気の違うものを楽しみながら買い足す。ベランダ飲みの定番として、蒸し暑くなる前のこの時期に特に活躍するグラスだ。外で使うのに適した理由を改めて考えてみたら、４つもあった。

１.10センチ程度と背が低いので、酔っ払ってうっかり手をひっかけても倒れにくい。
2.コップ感覚でしっかり手にフィットするので、ステムを持たずとも持ちあげやすい。
3.口径が広いので注ぎやすい。
4.薄手が好きなら永木さん、しっかりしたものがよければホルムガードと好みで使い分け可能。

これだけ理由が揃えば「屋外でガラスは心配」という来客がいても「ガラスのほうが絶対美味しいんだから、気にしないで」と説得できるでしょう。どちらもスタッキングができて収納を節約できるし、長男が朝スムージーを作る時によく使っているので、それこそ気軽なコップ感覚なのだと思う。ノンアルコールにも合う形は、家族みんながふと使いたいと思うらしい。夕方も、夜も、昼も、おもてなしも、朝ごはんも……、そのうつわを前にさまざまなオケージョンが浮かび、勝手に用途が広がっていくっていい。
