
Octagonal plate by Michikazu Sakai
This is an octagonal plate glazed with ORIBE (green glaze) by Michikazu Sakai. I really like the green that Sakai creates. Deep green but not too dark, which is just right for home cooking. I thought I would use it together with the white octagonal plates that I inherited from my mother, but when I got home and lined them up, I faced the fact that they were hexagonal. Oh no! However, the ORIBE green and the KOHIKI white blend perfectly, so I enjoy the rhythmic combination of octagonal and hexagonal. This combination goes well with Japanese bamboo shoot dishes, Chinese-style meals such as scallion dumplings, dimsam, and stir-fried greens. When paired with colour-decorated porcelain, it feels even more like an ethnic food restaurant. For Western-style dishes like carpaccio, I pair it with Delft-style plates which is also nice looking.

これは境道一さんの織部釉の八角皿。境さんが生み出すグリーンがとても好きだ。深いけれど軽やか。その頃合いが家庭の料理にちょうどいい。定番の八角皿は、ひと目見た時、母から譲り受けた同じ八角皿を取り皿にして一緒に使おうと思い購入したのだけれど、家に帰って並べてみたら「なんと、そちらは六角だった」という顛末。しかし、粉引の白の柔らかさと織部のややムラのある色合いが絶妙に馴染むため、八角と六角が混じり合うリズミカルな組み合わせを楽しんでいる。この組み合わせに合うのは、なんといっても、たけのこ料理、次に中華な献立。ニラ饅頭、シュウマイ、青菜の炒め。赤絵や染付の取り皿と合わせると、ますます中華街とかエスニック店みたい。簡単な炒め物が高見えするのだった。洋風なら白身魚のカルパッチョ。そんな時は、同じ白でもスッキリした白。錫釉系のデルフト調の取り皿を合わせている。これもとてもいい。
