Cylinder cup of Atsushi Ogata

This is Atsushi Ogata’s HAKEME (brushstroke) long cup. It is 9.5 cm tall. I can hold it firmly in my hand and enjoy a grasp of coffee or tea. The technique of decorating the surface of a vessel by applying white clay with a brush is called ‘HAKAME（brushstroke）.’ It is often applied in a circular pattern on plates, bowls, and tea bowls, so applied to this sleek, free-form cup is surprisingly fresh. Ogata has always modernised traditional pottery techniques like brushstroke to showcase new aspects of ceramics. I placed it next to my tumbler and realized that the sizes were exactly the same. When I reported this to Ogata, he said, ‘You intuitively chose and purchased something that fits perfectly with your favorite product.’ However, products like tumblers are designed by combining various elements, such as the structure of the human body and modern lifestyles. He must have always attuned to what kind of lifestyle such as designs and sizes fit into the life. Through Ogata’s creative process, this design and size emerged in ceramics. Every time I encounter this kind of craftsmanship, I am reminded of how profoundly meaningful hand-made everyday tools truly are.

これは尾形アツシさんの刷毛目（はけめ）ロングカップ。ロングというだけあって、高さ9.5センチと大きめで、片手でガシッと握ってたっぷりのコーヒーやお茶を飲みたい気分の時に手が伸びる。うつわの表面に白土を刷毛で塗り装飾する技法を「は・け・め」という。皿や鉢、茶碗などにぐるりと丸く描かれることが多いので、すっきりとした筒型のカップは、意外だった。しかし思えば尾形さんは、刷毛目や粉引など古くからある焼物の技法をいつもモダンに表現して、陶芸の新しい魅力を見せてくれる人。すっきりデザインのフリーカップに施したホーダー状の刷毛目は、なんだかとても新しい。ある日、愛用しているタンブラーの横に置いてみて驚いた。サイズがぴったり同じではないの！　たまらず尾形さんに報告すると「愛用品とピタリ、同じ手取りのものを直感的に選んで購入してくれたんですね」とおっしゃっていたけれど、タンブラーのようなプロダクトは、人の身体のつくりや現代の生活様式をマーケティングするなど、さまざまな要素を掛け合わせてデザインされているものだ。そういうデザインやサイズがフィットするいまの暮らしとはどういうものか、いつもアンテナを張っているからこそ、尾形さんという作家の思考を経由して「焼物で、このデザインとサイズ」が生まれたのだと思う。作り人の思考と手技に触れるたび、暮らしの道具とはつくづく奥深いものだと思う。
