Bowls by Takayuki Watanabe

They are bowls by Takayuki Watanabe aptly named ‘KUBOMI’ (meaning ‘hollow’). It is named as such because it is made by pouring clay into a hollow in the ground and moulding it to reflect the shape of the hollow of the earth. There are many ceramic bowls in the world, but what makes this bowl special is that it visualises the fact that pottery is born from the earth. Watanabe once said ‘Ceramics are influenced by the surrounding environment at the time of creation, such as gravity and atmospheric conditions, resulting in variations in thickness, thinness, or the formation of rims on the inside. Each piece is unique, much like the birth of life, and there is nothing absolute about it.’ Since the bowl is thin and fragile, it may break. But that too is part of nature’s order. How romantic. Among the bowls lined up at his solo exhibition, there were three shapes I liked, and they fit together perfectly when stacked. So I took them all. Someday, might live using only these three bowls, like the monks’ bowls in a Zen temple. Treasure every fleeting moment.

これは渡辺隆之さんのボウル、その名も「くぼみ」。大地にできたくぼみに粘土を流して、その形を写し取るような作り方で生まれるうつわだから、そう名付けられている。このようにコロンとしたかたちの陶器のボウルは世の中にいくつもあるけれど、その中でこのうつわが特別な理由は、焼物が大地から生まれたことを可視化していることにある。渡辺さんは以前インタビューしたときにこう言っていた。「焼物は重力や大気の状態など作られる時の周囲の環境の影響を受け、厚みが出たり、薄く仕上がったり、あるいは内側に縁が入り込んだり、一回一回すべて出来栄えが異なる。それは生命が生まれるのと同じくらい『一度きり』の出来事であり、絶対的なものはないと感じられる」と。薄くはかないうつわだから、割れてしまうこともあるだろう。だけどそれもまた自然の摂理なのだ。なんとロマンチックなことか。個展会場にずらりとならぶボウルの中に、好きなかたちが３つあって、なんとなく重ねてみたら上手に入れ子になった。だからそのままぜんぶいただいた。いつか一人になったら、この三つ組碗だけを使って生きていくかもしれない、禅寺で僧侶が使う応量器みたいに。あらゆる一期一会を大事にしながら。
