Small plate by Akinobu Ito
They are colourful small plates by Akinobu Ito. I purchased four plates in different colours at a pottery shop called ‘Rusan’ in Nishi-Ogikubo（closed in 2020）. When it comes to coloured paintings, Japan has traditional production areas like Arita and Kutani, which typically use red, blue, and green. However, the pastel-toned colour combinations, pink, yellow, and purple, here are completely different and exceptionally appealing. I once asked Ito about his colour schemes. “As someone who loves old pottery, I became fascinated by the diversity of decorative techniques found in ceramics from China, Vietnam, and Europe. I found it enjoyable to freely rearrange patterns, colours, and shapes in my mind and incorporate them into my work.” Indeed, there may be similar colour schemes in Vietnamese Bát Tràng pottery or European Meissen porcelain. However, the composition and colours here are unique, with sharp red lines that add a crispness to the overall softness. It is heartening to see that colour painting cultures from throughout history and around the world have served as sources of inspiration, leading to the emergence of a new style here in Japan. The blurred and soft lines are the result of a technique called ‘INBAN,’ in which a stamp is carved with a pattern and then used to stamp the design. I like to use these plates to serve soft, wobbly xiao long bao, which matches the fun atmosphere of eating chinese food.

これは伊藤聡信さんの色絵小皿。かつて西荻窪にあったうつわ店「魯山」にて色違いで４枚買い求めたのは、ピンク、イエロー、パープルという色の組み合わせがあまりにもかわいかったから。色絵といえば、日本には有田や九谷という産地があり、伝統的には朱や呉須、緑を基調としているけれど、それとはまったく異なるパステル調の色合わせがとてもいい。あるとき、伊藤さんに配色についてうかがったことがある（うつわディクショナリー#32 伊藤環さんの錆銀彩と白磁）。古いものが好きで各国の陶磁器を見るうちに、中国にもベトナムにもヨーロッパにも存在する絵付けの多様さにひかれ、文様、色、形を自分の中で自由に組み替えて作品にすることが楽しくなったのだそう。なるほど、ベトナムのバッシャン焼きやマイセンの磁器には、これに近い配色があるかもしれない。とはいえ、きりっとした赤い線で全体のやわらかさを引き締めるなど、他にはない構図と色。古今東西の色絵文化がアイデアソースとなり、巡り巡ってここ日本で新しい作風が生まれているとはたのもしい。線がぼんやりしていたり、柔らかかったりするのは、絵柄を彫ったハンコを作り、スタンプすることで模様を描く「印判（いんばん）」という技法だから。ゆるゆるとした雰囲気にあわせて、ぷるぷるの小籠包をのせる使い方が一番気に入っている。
