Urushi bowls by Tomoaki Nakano

They are URUSHI lacquer bowls by Tomoaki Nakano for my family of four. When my son turns 12 years old, I buy him a URUSHI lacquer bowl hoping that it will be the bowl of his life. I take them to Nakano’ls annual solo exhibition at ‘Utsuwa Kenshin’ in Aoyama, and let him choose ‘the one’ bowl of their own. Some might think, ‘Why not give them authentic URUSHI lacquerware from a younger age?’ But I think it’s better to wait until they’re old enough to use a size that fits comfortably in their hands. 12 years old is also a good age to meet and talk with a craftsman and know the world of Japanese traditional crafts. Nakano was born into a family of lacquerware shokunin (artisans) of Echizen Kawada, but he works as an artist rather than a shokunin. In the traditional lacquerware industry, the production of vessels is divided among specialists: those who shape the wood, those who apply the lacquer, and those who sell the products. However, artists like Nakano design the shapes, commission woodworkers (who create bowl shapes from wood) to make the forms, and then apply lacquer by himself to create his own works. Nakano’s designs are clean and simple, perfect for modern living, and his lacquer work is soft and smooth, which is exactly fit in my style. The black ones belong to my sons. ‘TEME-NURI (plain URUSHI color, slightly brown)’ are for mom and dad. My eldest son chose a thick ‘Marumi Bowl’ in 2019, saying, ‘This feels just right in my hands,’ and my younger son chose a deep, stylish ‘Yanagi Bowl’ in 2021, saying, ‘This size is perfect even for white rice.’ Both took only a few minutes to choose. It’s wonderful how they can make intuitive choices based on the information from their palms. As the new school year approaches, I always reflect on that sense of beauty.

これは中野知昭さんの漆椀、家族4人分。我が家では中学にあがると漆椀が与えられる。毎年12月に青山の「うつわ謙心」で開催される個展に連れて行って、作り手の中野さんと少しお話してから「これ」という一椀を選んでもらうのだ。「もっと幼い頃から本物の漆を与えよ」という考えもあると思うけれど、私は、大人になるまでずっと使えるサイズが手になじむようになる頃を目安に。12歳というタイミングは、ものづくりする人に会ってお話するにもいい年齢なのではないかと思っている。中野さんは、越前河和田漆器の塗師職人の家系に生まれながら、職人ではなく作家として活動している。伝統的な漆器産業では、製作するうつわのデザインに合わせて、木地を轢く人、漆を塗る人、販売する人が分業するけれど、中野さんのような作家は、お椀や皿、盆などのかたちを自らデザインして木地師（木材から椀型を作る人）にオーダーし、その木地に漆を塗って作品として提案する。中野さんは、いまの暮らしに使いたいすっきりとしたデザインもいいし、なんといっても塗りが柔らかくなめらかで、しかし甘い雰囲気になることなく、すっきりとしているところが私のツボ。溜め塗りと黒漆の椀のうち、黒いのは息子たちのものだ。長男は2019年に、厚みのある「丸美椀」を「僕の手にはこれがしっくりくるよ」と即決し、次男は2021年に、深さのあるスタイリッシュな「柳椀」を「この大きさなら白飯もいけるよね」とさっと選んだ。二人とも時間にして数分。手のひらの情報を頼りに直感で選ぶって素晴らしい。新学期を前にすると、その矜持に思いをはせる。
